Before he became a global sensation and earned the beloved title of the “Son of Netflix”, South Korean actor Song Kang was carving out an ordinary path with an appreciation for the arts. Born on April 23, 1994, in Suwon, South Korea, he grew up in a creatively inclined household—his father was an artistic gymnast and his mother worked as a piano teacher. Despite being surrounded by physical and musical expression, a young Song Kang did not immediately set his sights on the entertainment spotlight.
Before stepping onto television screens, he explored various interests and even considered pursuing a career as an idol after receiving multiple casting offers from talent agencies. Ultimately, his heart gravitated toward the depth of storytelling through acting. He went on to major in Film Arts at Konkuk University, laying the academic and technical foundation for his future craft.
His professional entry into the industry came in 2017 when he made his acting debut with a supporting role in the tvN romantic-comedy series The Liar and His Lover. This initial step opened doors for him to expand his resume through diverse projects. During his early years, Song didn’t just limit himself to television dramas; he actively built his public presence by taking on unexpected challenges. He stepped into the hosting arena as a master of ceremonies for the music program Inkigayo in 2018 and showcased his quick wits and charm as a fixed cast member on the variety show Village Survival, the Eight. He also appeared in several music videos, gradually building name recognition and winning over early fans with his boyish charm and approachable energy.
Though his early career was defined by smaller supporting turns and variety appearances, these foundational years were crucial. They allowed him to hone his on-screen presence away from the intense pressures of instant stardom. When he finally landed his massive breakout roles in hits like Love Alarm and Sweet Home, the dedication and versatility he cultivated during his pre-stardom days shone through, transforming him from a promising rookie into one of the most recognizable leading men in Hallyu history.
