The story of Weslley Pinto Batista—universally known as Patati—is a powerful testament to resilience, raw talent, and the unpredictable paths that lead football players to the grand stages of Europe.

The Origins of “Patati”

Born on October 1, 2003, in Presidente Dutra, a municipality in the Brazilian state of Maranhão, Patati grew up playing amateur football with a relentless passion. Coming from modest means, buying a proper pair of football boots was often out of the question. Instead, he had to borrow boots from others. Because these borrowed pairs were frequently far too big for his feet, his clumsy-looking footwear earned him the nickname “Patati”, referencing a famous Brazilian clown duo, Patati Patatá. What began as a childhood moniker stuck with him, eventually becoming the name emblazoned across the backs of shirts in top-tier European leagues.

A Hard-Fought Ascent

Patati’s early football journey was far from smooth. As a teenager, he accepted an invitation to play for a club in Jataí, Goiás, only to be abandoned upon arrival. He spent six grueling months surviving on grit, fighting through hunger while playing at a local football school before he could finally scrape together the means to return home.

Undeterred, his talent eventually caught the eye of scouts. In December 2019, following a successful trial, he joined the youth setup of historic Brazilian club Santos, a breeding ground for legendary wingers like Neymar and Rodrygo. Patati signed his first professional contract shortly after, steadily rising through the youth ranks before making his senior debut in 2022.

Taking Flight in Europe

Looking to test his mettle abroad, Patati transferred to Israeli powerhouse Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2024, where he continued to showcase his trademark flair, low center of gravity, and explosive dribbling from the wing.

His upward trajectory caught the attention of Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, who secured his signature on a five-year contract. Slotting seamlessly into the Eredivisie and European competitions, Patati has quickly established himself as an exciting, dynamic asset—proving that the boy who once played in oversized, borrowed boots has all the tools to light up the global game.
