From Obscurity to Global Fame: Aaron Copland’s Masterstroke

For nearly a century, “Simple Gifts” remained safely preserved within handwritten manuscript songbooks kept by Shaker scribes. That changed dramatically in 1944, when legendary American composer Aaron Copland was searching for a folk theme to anchor a ballet score commissioned by choreographer Martha Graham.

The resulting ballet, Appalachian Spring, became a towering monument of 20th-century American music. Copland took Brackett’s modest tune and wove it through a series of orchestral variations, anchoring the ballet’s emotional climax. The melody’s pastoral warmth and optimistic stride captured the essence of the American frontier.

Copland later extracted the suite version of Appalachian Spring, cementing “Simple Gifts” in the standard classical repertoire. In 1945, the suite won the Pulitzer Prize for Music, instantly lifting a humble Shaker dance tune into international prominence.

The Modern Metamorphosis: “Lord of the Dance”

The song’s cultural footprint expanded even further in 1968, when poet and hymn writer Sydney Carter penned new Christian lyrics to Brackett’s melody, creating the modern hymn “Lord of the Dance.”

Carter maintained the joyful, rhythmic cadence of the original while reinterpreting the imagery around the life and ministry of Jesus. This adaptation bridged sacred and secular traditions once more, making the tune a beloved staple in Christian churches, schools, and community choirs worldwide.

Why the Melody Endures

The enduring magic of “Simple Gifts” lies in its timeless paradox: it is structurally uncomplicated yet emotionally resonant. In an increasingly fast-paced and complex world, Brackett’s 19th-century lyric serves as a gentle meditation on what truly matters—finding contentment in simplicity, shedding pretense, and embracing a life of quiet grace.
