The Rise, Reign, and Return of Song Kang: The Journey of the “Son of Netflix”

Few actors have captured the global imagination quite like Song Kang (송강). With his striking visuals, versatile acting range, and an uncanny ability to anchor major hit series, he has transitioned from a fresh-faced rookie to a certified Hallyu superstar. Affectionately dubbed the “Son of Netflix” due to his heavy presence on the global streaming platform, Song Kang’s journey is a masterclass in dedication, charm, and steady artistic growth.

From Artistic Roots to Acting Aspirations

Born on April 23, 1994, in Suwon, South Korea, Song grew up in an environment surrounded by creativity. His father was an artistic gymnast, and his mother worked as a piano teacher. Before catching the acting bug, a young Song Kang had diverse dreams—ranging from becoming an architect to a furniture designer.

However, everything changed when he watched Leonardo DiCaprio’s iconic performance in Titanic. Inspired by the emotional depth on screen, Song set his sights on becoming an actor. He went on to major in Film Arts at Konkuk University. Before making his official debut, his towering height and striking looks brought him numerous offers to enter the K-pop idol industry, but he turned them down, choosing to focus entirely on his craft as an actor.

Breaking Out: The “Son of Netflix” Era

Song made his television debut in 2017 with the tvN romantic-comedy The Liar and His Lover, followed by supporting roles in Man in the Kitchen and variety show stints like Village Survival, the Eight (where he showcased his endearing, easygoing personality).

His career trajectory skyrocketed in 2019 when he beat out massive competition to land the lead role of Hwang Sun-oh in Netflix’s hit webtoon adaptation Love Alarm. This catapulted him into international stardom overnight.

Refusing to be typecast as just a romantic heartthrob, Song consciously built a wildly diverse filmography:

  • The Monster-Thriller Genre: He showcased his gritty, physical acting chops as Cha Hyun-su in the dark apocalyptic thriller Sweet Home.
  • The Artistry of Dance: He spent months rigorously learning ballet to authentically portray a young ballet dancer fighting through hardship in Navillera.
  • Deep Romance: He pushed emotional boundaries in campus-romance hits like Nevertheless and workplace dramas like Forecasting Love and Weather.
  • Fantasy and Comedy: He blended supernatural flair with sharp comedic timing as a centuries-old powerless demon in My Demon, earning major acclaim at the SBS Drama Awards.

Military Service and Triumphant Comeback

At the peak of his career momentum, Song fulfilled his mandatory military service, enlisting as an active-duty soldier in April 2024. True to his diligent nature, he spent his time in service focusing on self-improvement and physical fitness.

Following his military discharge, Song wasted no time returning to what he loves best. His post-military projects have cemented his evolution into a more mature, seasoned actor. He stunned audiences with his deeply immersive portrayal of a genius piano prodigy in the series Four Hands, Two Sonatas, proving that his time away only sharpened his artistic intuition. He has continued captivating fans with major starring roles, such as in the anticipated romance-melo series White Scandal.

Beyond the Screen

Off-screen, Song Kang is known for his introverted yet warm personality (he is an INTP). True to his creative upbringing, he enjoys playing the piano, reading mystery novels to unwind, and staying active through rigorous workouts. His dedicated global fandom, known affectionately as Songpyeon, has stood firmly by his side through every chapter of his career.
